A resignation letter is one of the most important letters that you can ever write. Yet, few people give a conscious thought about how to write them correctly. Even if you are planning to change jobs well in advance, you will dedicate a lot of time in writing a perfect resume, work very hard to prepare well for the interview, and yet put off writing the resignation letter to the last minute. Now, that is a big mistake. How often do you find people who will tell you that they will like to change the way that they had written their resignation letter? May be, even you feel the same way sometimes.
The good sample resignation letter will also include the things you have learned from the company that you can use to implement in the next company. It is a compliment bosses like to get (when you mention, you have improved your skills working under his leadership). This will help you to get positive recommendations when your future employer contacts the current employer for your service history.
Often times, when an individual decides to resign, they are disgruntled and dissatisfied with their current employment. Do not to allow this negative attitude to shine through in your letter. Use only positive, professional language when composing. If your school has done something to upset you, remember, there is no point in stooping to a low-level and sacrificing your professionalism just to get the temporary gratification of complaining.
Your feelings. If there is a great wave of emotion involved in your resignation, you need not broadcast this to the entire administration. If you were frustrated or angry over a matter or two don’t indicate it within the context of the letter. Better yet keep it to yourself. This is not a problem letter that you would normally post on the Internet. This is something personal and professional. Don’t act like a kid anymore trying to seek empathy from someone superior. Stand firm and be decent citing the reasons instead.
Listing reasons for your resignation is unnecessary. Do not use the resignation letter as a time to vent your frustrations. Your employer probably already knows your reasons for wishing to leave. You do not need to reiterate them. Simply be straight forward and to the point. Plainly say, ”I am resigning”.
